White Men Can’t Jump Review: 2023 Remake Bounces But It’s Not Slam Dunk

Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes were already established stars when White men can’t jump was released in 1992. Harrelson was known for starring in Health, snipers of Mo’ Better Blues, New Jack City, and Jungle fever. Individually, they had a certain bravado and smug sympathy that allowed them, and in turn, white men can’t jump to reach great heights. The film was a success and captured the zeitgeist of sports, competition and and a love of a game, specifically basketball.

In version 2023 of White men can’t jumpdirector Calmatic, coming out of party in the House, it never scores as great as the original, and even if you didn’t have that to compare it to, you don’t leave the start feeling empowered as much as you feel the filmmakers want you to be. sure, this white men can’t jump starring Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls, it may be nice, but the original from over 30 years ago, before the internet and social media, always sits courtside, as if watching to see if this movie would make a big hit. take.

Unfortunately, it’s hard these days, isn’t it? Many movies and TV shows are being remade in some form. Few of them really shine – Dead Ringers, The Conners, Night Court. Others puzzle: Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Fatal Attraction. But here we are, in 2023, and the new comedy from 20th Century Studios on Hulu offers a modern remix of another iconic film. Let’s see what he has.

Sinqua Wills and Jack Harlow

One of the most vibrant things. White men can’t jump he has multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow on his side, who makes his big screen debut here as Jeremy. The rapper delivers a grounded performance as a former basketball star whose injuries derailed his promising career. His creative partner on court here is Sinqua Walls, who consistently delivers memorable performances in the roles she plays—see The babysitter, the blackening, american soul, either The lights of Friday night for reference.

Walls plays Kamal, also a once-promising player whose fate took a big turn, mostly due to his own downfall. These guys have struggles today. Jeremy struggles financially and turned to alternative methods to find healing and inner balance after two ACL injuries: meditation, smoothies, and all those things that modern culture considers “woo-woo” but really aren’t.

Kamal wants a respite, especially from the past, but lives in the shadow of his well-known father, played by the late Lance Reddick. Still, he finds some lightness taking the court with his friends Renzo (Myles Bullock) and Speedy (Vince Staples). Jeremy and Kamal meet on the court and Jeremy assures Kamal that he can coach him. With detox juices and turning inward? Please. Well, that’s Kamal’s opinion, but sure enough, the guys come together and soon find themselves heading towards a new goal: playing in a tournament together to win $25,000 in prizes.

Shoot, miss, shoot, miss

White men can't jump 2023

Welcome to your new buddy comedy. About that… while subjective, there are only a handful of moments where this movie actually felt comical. That’s the problem with putting an established IP through a modern rinse cycle. Something dissolves. One gets the feeling that this all looked good on paper, but in execution it never really shines. And that’s a shame because you really want it.

Instead, writers Kenya Barris, Doug Hal and Ron Shelton, the man wrote the original film and durham bull, so it’s puzzling – update White men can’t jump with big touches of modern slang and scenes we’ve experienced before in movies before this one. The “what did you say?” heated growl. Insert: lunge at brother, fists clenched, as friends try to stop the ruckus. Or, say, predictable scenes that were set up just to bring two unlikely collaborators together. It’s not horrible to watch. It’s just not really inventive.

Everybody play the game

No doubt, running a studio is hard work. Not all products fly high, regardless of the intentions behind them, but there is something about White men can’t jump which feels more forced than organic. It’s like the studio is struggling to come up with new ideas and slips a redux onto the conference room table. But let’s move on. There are bright spots.

The cast is solid. Teyana Taylor plays Imani, Kamal’s wife. She dreams of being a successful hairdresser and Kamal wants to help. She also wants to be a good father to her little son. Laura Harrier plays Jeremy’s girlfriend, Tatiana, a dedicated dancer, who worries about her decision to raise money for knee surgery. Both actors elevate their characters to something beyond ordinary placeholders. Bravo to that. Then there’s Lance Reddick as Kamal’s father. This movie was one of Reddick’s last film roles, in fact. It’s always been a joy to experience this actor, and while he doesn’t get a lot of screen time here, he’s believable throughout.

Something to savor may be the final scenes of the tournament. Admittedly, they don’t quite capture the art of basketball in the unique way that Shelton delivered in his previous outing, but they’re loaded with vivid color. The movie comes to life here, perhaps intentionally, as players move around the outdoor court in bright, colorful hues. The game’s ending offers a few surprises, and it’s best to experience it on your own.

In the meantime, it was prudent for the studio to release this on Hulu, considering how the box office mood changes these days. White men can’t jump he takes shots, but never really scores. But when it comes to the streaming game, sometimes you just want to relax, not think too much and escape. To that end, White men can’t jump he probably deserved this place on the court.

White men can’t jump It airs exclusively on Hulu in the US, Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ under the Star brand in all other territories.
